Chaos to Connected - Helping Parents Navigate Challenging Behavior with Connection; Christian moms, behavior management, positive parenting, discipline, tantrums, aggression, biblical parenting

Do you feel like your child’s whining and tantrums are out of control? Are you wondering if what you’re seeing is actually normal? Do you feel like you are at your wits end, walking on eggshells, and/or just don’t know what to do anymore? Or maybe you feel exhausted and frustrated trying to manage your own triggers because you keep repeating the same yelling and lecturing cycle over and over again. Are you desperately trying to get your child to use a calming strategy but he/she refuses or it’s just not working? If you nodded along with any of that, you’re in the right place! Hi, I’m Kaili, pediatric occupational therapist, connection focused parent coach, and momma to 3 sweet littles. Back in 2020, I started an in-home daycare so I could stay home with my kids while making an income and let’s just say it didn’t go as planned. My oldest became very aggressive, something he had never been before. I tried all of the calming strategies and creating different spaces for him and NONE of it worked. I was really struggling because that is all I had been teaching other families to do for the last decade and to find out it wasn’t helping left me feeling even more hopeless. When I finally found the solution that transformed our family’s lives, I knew I needed to share it with other families in hopes they wouldn’t feel alone, emotionally exhausted, and spend their days wishing for naptime/bedtime like I had been. I created this podcast to give you tangible strategies to decrease your child’s behavior and also help you to learn to manage and resolve your own triggers. This podcast will help you gain more awareness and insights into child development and the root cause of your child’s behavior as well as help you break generational patterning that isn’t serving you. Inside this podcast you will find episodes filled with tips, tools, perspective shifts, and biblical truth to help you throughout your motherhood journey. Most of what I share is going to go against your natural responses and what mainstream will tell you to do, but that is because it includes what most of society is missing when they look at children and their behavior…CONNECTION. It is a vital necessity for all of us to operate out of our thinking brains and use logic, problem solving, reasoning, judgment, and impulse control, specifically when it comes to our responses and behaviors. While these strategies can be implemented for all ages, I focus primarily on 1-10 year olds since that is what I have most personal and professional experience with. If you want to stop feeling overwhelmed, stuck, and on the verge of your breaking point and truly make shifts in your parenting, your actions, thoughts, and responses, to gain more clarity, peace, and joy in your home, then let’s get to it! I know it can feel hard to step into the unknown, especially because you feel like you’ve tried it all, and honestly sometimes it feels easier to stay in a harder place because it’s familiar. But it’s not what God has for you or your child(ren). So take a minute, breathe deeply, and then join me as we jump into managing behaviors with connection! If you haven't listened to last week's episode, take some time (before or after this) and do so; I discussed communicating about problem solving with kids and tips on how to increase independence with problem solving even from a young age.

Today, I dive into praise.

When I first came across this style of connection focused parenting, I heard a lot of recommendations not to praise...like, at all. While I do believe in praising my children and do, I think there were definitely some good points from what I heard and it shifted how I carried out giving it.

Tune in as I share a couple insights about how we tend to praise our children and how you can shift it to make it more meaningful and special for your little one.

I've been reading a lot about communication and how to increase its effectiveness with our kids.
In reading more, I recognized that some of the ways I was saying things, while I meant it to be helpful, could be perceived as lacking confidence in my child.
Tune in today as I share more about how you can make slight shifts in how you phrase things to instill more empowerment, confidence, and independence in your child for problem solving, both with more challenging tasks and with siblings/other kids.

Some days of parenting are just challenging.

Not because your child is behaving in a certain way or having more meltdowns but just because you feel off. Maybe you can't pin point it, maybe you can.

But either way, it's a funk that is difficult to get out of.

If you're feeling this way, check out today's episode for some perspective + encouragement. And share with a friend who needs it too!

I have recently been reading the book "How to talk so your child will listen & how to listen so your child will talk" and one of the concepts I discovered was the thought that punishment is a distraction.

As I was reflecting on it, I realized I couldn't agree more.

So often we are using punishment because we don't know what else to do, it's how we were raised, or we just don't want our kids to turn out "bad".

But, what is often actually happening is our child is not thinking about how sorry he/she is. The child is usually upset, thinking about how to get revenge, how not to get caught next time, or even that they aren't a "good" kid because they messed up.

Tune in as I share 6 simple strategy shifts you can make to avoid punishment while still getting better behavior!

I think it's safe to say we all want to support our child's feelings and help them to actually work through them productively, but instead we are often denying them.

Denying your child’s feelings will lead your child to struggle to actually know what his/her feelings are or to have a lack of trust in them.

Want to know if you are subconsciously accepting or denying your child's feelings? Tune in today and I'll share 3 phrases you are likely using that communicate to your child that his/her feelings aren't accepted/okay. But stick around because I also give you 2 specific tips to start to change from denying to accepting that you won't want to miss!

Society is constantly pushing us as parents, caregivers, and professionals to see a child's behavior as disobedience, disrespect, and defiance and something we should be using punishments, shame, and bribes to resolve when in reality...

Behavior is a main way your child is communicating with you, especially before your child is old enough to clearly articulate his/her feelings and has had more time practicing and learning how to regulate a little more effectively.

This doesn't mean we don't address the behavior too, but it means identifying what is going on at a heart level and offering up empathy, love and understanding over a focus solely on obedience.

I would even go so far as to say, when your main goal as a parent is to gain obedience over everything else, there is likely some underlying patterning and conditioning that is forcing you to NEED control at all times.

The patterning and conditioning you come to parenting with also creates behavior in you that comes out when you are triggered; the same thing that is happening when your child is demonstrating behavior.

Tune in today as I dive more into this topic and share some practical ways you can begin to see behavior for what it really is....communication.
