One of the biggest things I hear from moms is that it is really difficult to manage their own triggers. Your brain works all day to manage and hold in feelings, some hurts we don't even realize we are carrying. When your brain is working on overdrive because you haven't eaten in 6 hours or you skipped lunch altogether or your blood sugar is out of whack, it has a ripple effect on your parenting. Your brain has too much going on that it no longer has enough energy to maintain your control and you are more easily triggered.
